Description

There is no end to the unimportant things I will get done when I have homework to do...

Submitted this and a couple other pieces to a scholarship competition; I don't see much potential for me to win it, but here's to hoping... :/
I have about 5+ hours of work still to do on this piece, but I'm not going to be able to finish it for a couple or so weeks. So here it is for now. Kind of a crappy photo, so I hope you can see all the important details.

I based this off a sketch I created more than a year ago; I think I just saw the image of the woman in my head, and liked the dramatic pose. Had my sister pose for the position in my mom's silk wedding dress and home-made corset, and looked at some pictures I took of St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague, for the stonework. The statue below was also based off a picture I from my trip, but I changed it around quite a bit. I like how it looks as though he's forced to support her, held by the ropes and in anguish. That, and coupled with the dark light, I imagine it as conveying an abuse of power (by her). With the knife, who knows what crime she has committed, with those who serve her suffering the greatest for her sins.

Acrylics on 24x36 canvas.

EDIT - June 6th, 2010 Learned a while back that I won 2nd place in the competition, which turns out to be a $1500 scholarship that goes right to my school! I was super surprised and very honored to be awarded this :)

Gosh! The lighting on this is stunning! I love the tone of it!

And congrats on winning the scholarship!
